The Sixteen Bodhisattva Precepts

The Three Fold Refuge

I take refuge in the Buddha
This means to take refuge in the unconditioned nature of all beings, and in our own capacity for enlightenment.
I take refuge in the Dharma
This is the heart's inmost request - to seek truth and wisdom.
I take refuge in the Sangha
This is the boundless interconnection of all beings.

The Three Pure Precepts

I vow to refrain from all action that increases suffering.
This is the intention to always practice a wise and compassionate restraint.
I vow to perform all action that increases awareness.
This is the intention to actually do what occurs to us that can cultivate true happiness for ourselves and others.
I vow to live for and with all beings.
This is the intention to always try to see things with an unselfish eye.
